Stop Child Abuse

David Boon – Former Australian Cricketer

David Boon

Why have you agreed to get involved in raising awareness about the problem of child abuse?

I decided to become involved in this campaign because children really deserve better. All kids need to be safe. No child deserves to be abused. Kids need to have fun, feel loved and be given the chance to grow into confident and happy people. Child abuse takes all that away from children. It stops them from being kids. It makes them feel unloved and rejected. It stops them from feeling that adults care about them. Kids should never feel they are alone. We have to work together to stop child abuse. All kids have a right to be kids and have a childhood

What do you see as some of the challenges that face us as a community in dealing with the problem of child abuse?

We can’t keep denying that this is a huge problem for all of us. It’s not nice to have to think about child abuse but we have to. We can’t put our heads in the sand. Child abuse is a major community problem and it is growing. It’s not an easy problem to solve and we can’t solve overnight. It will take effort and commitment from everybody. I really think that we need to change community attitudes so that all children are our priority. I hope that people keep up their motivation to protect children.

What would you say to other adults about playing their part to ensure that all children in our community are safe from abuse?

It is a responsibility that we need to take seriously. I think we have to listen to kids and believe them. We have to know as much as we can about the topic. We need to be open to learning more. We need to keep in mind that kids rely on adults to keep them safe. If we don’t do anything, child abuse will continue. I would really encourage everyone to get involved with one of the activities of this campaign. You will be making a difference to all kids everywhere.
